What is the difference between of MUDAR and TROCAR in Portuguese?

Since I started teach Portuguese, I always get the question; "what is the difference between of the verbs MUDAR and TROCAR?"

In this portuguese class you will learn to use these confusing portuguese verbs

The verb “mudar” (to change) has some meanings similar to those of “trocar”: “alterar e substituir” (to alter and to replace).

E.g: você trocou de móveis (mudou de móveis = Substituiu os móveis).

E.g: you have changed your furniture (changed furniture = Replaced furniture).

Also, “mudar” means:

a) Moving from one place to another: “Ela se mudou de casa” She has moved house.

b) Change behavior: “Está mudado o João” João has changed (his behavior)

c) Arrange things differently: “Mudou os móveis” Someone has moved the furniture

d) “DESVIAR”, take another direction: “O carro mudou de direção” The car changed direction/course.

On the other hand, “TROCAR” (to exchange), in addition to the already mentioned sense of “altering, replacing”, means:

a) Exchange: “Trocamos experiências” We have exchanged experiences; “Trocamos de cargo” We have switched jobs.

b) Taking one thing instead of taking another: “Ela trocou os documentos” She has switched the documents.

c) Change: “Trocou euros em dólares” Someone has exchanged euros into for dollars.

d) Saying one thing instead of saying another: “Trocou os discursos” Someone has changed the speeches

Qual é a diferença entre MUDAR e TROCAR em português?

Desde que comecei a ensinar português, sempre recebo a pergunta; "qual é a diferença entre os verbos MUDAR e TROCAR?"

Nesta aula de português você aprenderá a usar esses verbos confusos em português.

O verbo MUDAR tem alguns sentidos semelhantes aos de trocar: alterar e substituir.

Ex.: você trocou de móveis (mudou de móveis. Substituiu os móveis).

Além disso, mudar significa:

a) Deslocar-se de um local para outro: Ela se mudou de casa.

b) Alterar o comportamento: Está mudado o João

c) Organizar as coisas de outro modo: Mudou os móveis (diferente de mudou de móveis, que significa que foram comprados móveis novos).

d) Desviar, tomar outro sentido: O carro mudou de direção.

Por outro lado, trocar, além do sentido já apontado de alterar, substituir, significa:

a) Permutar: Trocamos experiências; Trocamos de cargo.

b) Pegar uma coisa em vez de pegar outra: Ela trocou os documentos.

c) Cambiar: «Trocou euros em dólares.»

d) Dizer uma coisa em vez de dizer outra: Trocou os discursos (é diferente de Mudou o discurso, em que o que se diz é que houve mudança de comportamento). '
