What is Pleonasm

Since 2020 when I became a Portuguese teacher, I had never received a question; "what is the PLEONASMO in Portuguese?"

Do you know what is PLEONASMO?

Pleonasm is a figure of style that consists of using a redundant expression to reinforce an idea.

Lexical pleonasm is the way that novelists, poets, and composers tend to explore in their works, they use a repetition of words that have the same meaning.

For example, in the song of Raul Seixas

Eu nasci há dez mil anos atrás / I was born ten thousand years ago

“Ago” reinforces the verb “haver”, which was in the past tense.

Pleonasm, when not used intentionally as a figure of style, becomes a vice of language or a redundancy.

Redundancy is a common expressive resource in colloquial language. A child is much more likely to obey the commands “entra para dentro agora!” (get inside now!) and “não sobe aí em cima!” (don't get up there!) rather than “entra agora!” (get inside now!) and “não sobe aí!” (don't get up there!).

However, this orality should not be represented in the written language, in a formal modality of the Portuguese language.

O que é Pleonasmo

Pleonasmo é uma figura de estilo que consiste em usar uma expressão redundante para reforçar uma ideia.

Pleonasmo lexical é o modo que os romancistas, poetas e compositores costumam explorar em suas obras, eles usam uma repetição de palavras que possuem o mesmo sentido.

Por exemplo

na música do Raul seixas

Eu nasci há dez mil anos atrás

atrás reforça o verbo haver, que foi no passado

O pleonasmo, quando não usado intencionalmente como figura de estilo, passa a ser um vício de linguagem ou uma redundância.

A redundância é um recurso de expressividade comum na linguagem coloquial. É muito mais provável uma criança obedecer aos comandos “entra para dentro agora” e “não sobe aí em cima” em vez de “entra agora” e “não sobe aí”. Entretanto, essa oralidade não deve ser representada na língua escrita, em modalidade formal da língua portuguesa
