DIFFERENCE BETWENN TU AND VOCÊ

The pronouns “TU” and “VOCÊ” mean “you” in English. These two pronouns are commonly used throughout Brazil. Some regions use “tu” more, others use “você” more.

The pronoun “você” is the more used, especially in both São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, which are the biggest cities in Brazil, but it is also very common to hear people using the pronoun “tu” in these cities.

In southern Brazil, especially in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the use of the pronoun “tu” is the more common, and also in some regions of the northeast area, the use of “tu” is very common.

Anyway, both pronouns are used. The choice depends on the person, on the region, but after all, what is the difference between these two pronouns?

First, we need to understand the grammar difference. Officially, according to the ruling, we have the following personal pronouns:

Eu, tu, ele/ela (singular forms).

Nós, vós, eles/elas (plural forms).

And what about the pronoun “você”? Where is it?

The word “você” is a reduction of the personal title “Vossa Mercê”, which was originally the title used to refer to the king of Portugal, but over time, this pronoun became popular, and with time, “Vossa Mercê” was reduced to “vossemecê”, then to “vosmecê” until it was reduced to the word “você”.

And nowadays, there is already an even another reduction, only in spoken language, which is simply “cê”. When we speak quickly, we usually don't say "você", we say "cê".

For example, we rarely say:

- O que você está fazendo?

Generally, we say:

- O que CÊ TÁ fazendo?

Nowadays the pronoun “você” has exactly the same meaning as the pronoun “tu”, but the conjugation of verbs with each of these pronouns is different.

The pronoun “tu” must be conjugated in the second person singular, while the pronoun “você”, as it is a personal title, such as your Highness and your Honor, must be conjugated in the third person singular.

For example:

Tu falaste com a Maria ontem?

Você falou com a Maria ontem?

Diferença dos pronomes TU e VOCÊ

Os pronomes TU e VOCÊ significam “you” em inglês. Estes dois pronomes são comumente usados em todo o Brasil. Algumas regiões usam mais o “tu” outras usam mais o “você”.

O pronome “você” seja mais usado, especialmente em São Paulo e no Rio de Janeiro, que são as maiores cidades do Brasil, mas também é muito comum ouvir pessoas usando o pronome “tu” nessas cidades.

No sul do Brasil, especialmente no Rio Grande do Sul, o uso do pronome “tu” é mais comum, e também em algumas regiões do nordeste é muito comum o uso do “tu”.

Antes precisamos entender a gramática. Oficialmente, de acordo com a gramática, nós temos os seguintes pronomes pessoais:

Eu, tu, ele/ela (no singular).

Nós, vós, eles/elas (no plural).

E o pronome “você”? Onde está?

A palavrinha “você” é uma redução do pronome de tratamento “Vossa Mercê”, que originalmente era o pronome de tratamento usado para se referir ao rei de Portugal, mas com o passar do tempo, esse pronome foi se popularizando, e com o tempo, “Vossa Mercê” foi reduzido para “vossemecê”, depois para “vosmecê” até se reduzir à palavrinha “você”.

E hoje em dia, já existe uma redução ainda maior, apenas em língua falada, que é simplesmente “cê”. Quando falamos rapidamente, geralmente nós não falamos “você”, nós falamos “cê”.

Por exemplo, raramente nós falamos:

- O que você está fazendo?

Geralmente, nós falamos?

- O que CÊ TÁ fazendo?

O pronome “você”, hoje em dia este pronome tem exatamente o mesmo significado que o pronome “tu”, mas a conjugação de verbos com cada um destes pronomes é diferente.

O pronome “tu” deve ser conjugado na segunda pessoa do singular, enquanto o pronome “você” – por se tratar de um pronome de tratamento, tal como Vossa Alteza e Vossa Excelência – deve ser conjugado na terceira pessoa do singular.

Por exemplo:

Tu falaste com a Maria ontem?

Você falou com a Maria ontem?

Você entendeu a diferença entre VOCÊ e TU?
