OLHAR and VER in Portuguese

When you are learning Brazilian Portuguese, one of the difficulties you find is how to understand the difference among the verbs VER and OLHAR in Portuguese.

One of the most asked questions when you are learning Brazilian Portuguese is, what is the difference among the verbs VER, OLHAR and ENXERGAR?

Today in this Portuguese Class we are going to answer that question.

The verbs VER, OLHAR, and ENXERGAR are synonymous, but there are some differences:

The verb “OLHAR” we, Brazilians, use when we want to put more attention on something, or for something that you voluntarily observe.

For example: Olhe/Observe/Preste atenção aquela casa, é tão linda. / Look atObserve/Pay attention to that house, it's so beautiful.

Or another example is the song by Tom Jobim Girl from Ipanema

“Olha que coisa mais linda mais cheia de graça” / “Look, what a beautiful thing so full of grace”

In this sense, the verb “OLHAR” means to “pay attention”.

We can also use the verb “OLHAR” in the sense of “look for”

For example: Eu perdi minha carteira, já olhei/procurei na mesa e no meu quarto e não encontrei / I lost my wallet, I have already looked/searched for it on the table and in my room and haven't found it

We also use the verb “OLHAR” in the sense of “take care of”

For example: Você pode olhar/cuidar meu filho enquanto eu vou no mercado hoje / Can you take care of/check on my child while I go to the market later today.

The verb “VER” we use for something more involuntary, something you don't pay attention to.

For example: Você viu/notou a minha camisa nova? Não, de fato eu não vi/prestei atenção

Have you seen/noticed my new shirt? No, actually I haven't seen/paid attention

Enquanto eu estava na praia eu vi um peixe/ While I was on the beach I saw a fish

In this sense it was involuntary, you weren't paying attention to it and suddenly it happened

We also use the verb “VER” for the sense of "watch"

Eu estou vendo/assistindo ao jogo de futebol / I am watching the football game

And we can use the verbs “VER” and “OLHAR” in the same sense of “look for”

Eu vou ver um carro novo amanhã

Eu vou olhar um carro novo amanhã

Eu vou procurar um carro novo amanhã

I will look for a new car tomorrow

And the verb “ENXERGAR” we use in the sense of “PERCEIVE” with the vision sense

For example: Você consegue enxergar/perceber o que está escrito na placa lá / Can you see/perceive what is written on the sign there

We can also use the verb “ENXERGAR” in the sense of "feel"

For example: Ela não enxerga/percebe que aquele homem não gosta dela / She doesn't see/realize that that man doesn't like her

Uma das dúvidas quando você está aprendendo português brasileiro é, qual a diferença entre os verbos VER, OLHAR e ENXERGAR?

Os verbos VER, OLHAR e ENXERGAR são sinônimos, mas há algumas diferenças:

O verbo OLHAR nós brasileiros usamos quando queremos colocar mais atenção em algo, ou algo que você observa voluntariamente.

Por exemplo: Olhe/Observe/Preste atenção aquela casa, é tão linda.

Ou outro exemplo a música de Tom Jobim Garota de Ipanema

“Olha que coisa mais linda mais cheia de graça”

Neste sentido o verbo olhar quer dizer preste atenção

Também podemos usar o verbo olhar no sentido de procurar

Por exemplo: Eu perdi minha carteira, já olhei/procurei na mesa e no meu quarto e não encontrei

Usamos o verbo OLHAR também para no sentido de cuidar

Por exemplo: Você pode olhar/cuidar meu filho enquanto eu vou no mercado hoje

Já o verbo VER usamos para algo mais involuntário, algo que você não presta atenção

Por exemplo: Você viu/notou a minha camisa nova? Não, de fato eu não vi/prestei atenção

Enquanto eu estava na praia eu vi um peixe, neste sentido foi algo involuntário, você não estava prestando atenção e de repente aconteceu

Usamos o verbo VER também para o sentido de ASSISTIR

Eu estou vendo/assistindo ao jogo de futebol

E podemos usar os verbos VER e OLHAR no mesmo sentido de procurar

Eu vou ver um carro novo amanhã

Eu vou olhar um carro novo amanhã

Eu vou procurar um carro novo amanhã

E o verbo ENXERGAR usamos no sentido de PERCEBER com a visão

Por exemplo: Você consegue enxergar/perceber o que está escrito na placa lá

Também podemos usar o verbo ENXERGAR no sentido de sentimento

Por exemplo: Ela não enxerga/percebe que aquele homem não gosta dela
